Essential Functions:
- Directly handles claims involving coverage issues in pre-suit and litigated matters on multiple lines of the company’s business
- Proactively investigates, evaluates, and negotiates disputed claims with effective resolution strategies and mitigation of risk
- Manages outside counsel’s representation of the company in litigated and other matters
- Provides consultative advice to claims staff and management to assess liability and damages, and analyze insurance coverage issues
- Conducts independent legal research when needed in support of role functions
- Assists in the evaluation of defense and coverage counsel, and advises claims staff on the selection of appropriate counsel
- Actively participates in meetings and roundtables with claims staff
- Develops and presents training to claims staff on legal trends and best practices
- Evaluates the potential filing of declaratory judgment matters
- Assists claims staff in preparation for depositions and to respond to subpoenas and requests for document production
- Provides legal advice to claims staff on other projects as directed
- Collaborates with business units outside of claims to develop and execute initiatives consistent with company objectives
Education & Experience:
- Juris Doctorate (JD)
- Bar admission in at least one state
- Ten years of experience in property and casualty insurance coverage defense litigation within a law firm or in-house legal team or related experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Superior knowledge of litigation management
- Superior knowledge of the theory and practice of the claim function
- Analytical ability and demonstrated experience of good judgment with regard to legal liability and coverage
- Excellent knowledge of insurance contracts, medical terminology and legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for all lines of insurance
- Excellent knowledge of computers and claims systems
- Superior organizational and written and verbal communication skills
- Superior investigative and problem-solving abilities
- Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving
Per the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the hiring range for this position for Colorado-based team members is $132,527.88 - $170,248.86. The hiring range for other locations may vary.
