POSITION SUMMARY:
The WRC Proofreader is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and quality of documents submitted to the Winston Resource Center. This position involves carefully reviewing materials to identify and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition. Additionally, the role ensures that legal citations are accurate and properly formatted in accordance with The Bluebook standards. In this role, the Proofreader works closely with attorneys, other firm personnel, and team members to address questions, clarify requirements, and provide feedback on language usage and legal terminology. Using standardized proofreading marks, reference materials, and firm-approved tools, the Proofreader ensures documents meet the firm's guidelines for accuracy and consistency.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Proofreads and marks errors on documents as necessary for accuracy, using tools such as Microsoft Word with track changes, Adobe, PowerPoint, or other relevant software; consults with customers for clarification as needed.
- Ensures all legal citations are accurate, complete, and properly formatted according to The Bluebook standards. This includes verifying case names, reporters, statutes, pinpoint citations, parentheticals, short forms, string citations, etc., to address a variety of legal citation needs.
- Skilled in generating a Table of Authorities using Best Authority or similar software for litigation documents, performing cross-reference linking, and conducting defined terms checks for corporate documents.
- Records time in BigHand Hub or another task tracking software in an accurate and timely manner to ensure proper tracking of assignments.
- Provides proofreading assistance, when appropriate, for work completed by other members of the WRC, and addresses questions from customers and peers regarding vocabulary, grammar, correct usage, legal terminology, and related matters.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and 1+ years of legal proofreading experience or 5+ years of legal proofreading experience in lieu of a degree required.
- This role is fully remote and must reside within a commutable distance to the local applicable office.

- Knowledge and understanding of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Knowledge and understanding of proofreading symbols and techniques.
- Knowledge of legal terminology.

SALARY
Illinois based applicants only: The target annual salary range for this role is currently $66,000 - $77,000 based on a regular, full-time schedule. The amount of compensation offered will be determined by several factors, including but not limited to experience, qualifications, market data and internal equity. Total compensation includes a comprehensive healthcare benefits package and yearly retirement contribution and may include an annual discretionary merit bonus.
