Umbra is looking for an experienced attorney to work in partnership with Company’s Export Control Team to ensure our operations align with regulatory standards and industry best practices. As
Compliance Counsel, you will be an integral member of the legal team and company as a whole. In this key role, you will support the development and execution of compliance strategies that support our rapid growth while upholding our commitment to integrity and excellence. The successful candidate will play a critical role in establishing and strengthening our compliance framework, focusing primarily, but not exclusively on export control and sanctions compliance, while fostering a culture of accountability across the company.

Our aim for this position is to have an individual work in Umbra's Santa Barbara, CA or Arlington, VA office, in a Hybrid role.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive export control and sanctions compliance policies and procedures.
- Provide guidance, training, and support for global sales and marketing teams on compliance-related issues, including export authorizations, jurisdictional determinations, Technology Control Plans (TCPs), and other operations.
- Help to build and maintain strong relationships with regulatory authorities, including the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), as well as industry associations, and partners.
- Monitor and advise on legal and regulatory developments impacting the company; prepare position papers and submit comments on proposed changes to regulations.
- Cultivate a culture of integrity and compliance across the organization.
- Support the investigation and documentation of compliance incidents, violations, and complaints, implementing corrective actions and remediation plans.
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports, filings, and disclosures in accordance with federal and state laws, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
- Develop data-driven metrics to track and report on the progress of the compliance program to senior management.
- Conduct compliance risk assessments and audits to identify and mitigate potential risks.
- Contribute to other projects and initiatives, leveraging your skills and expertise.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Attorney in good standing in at least one state in the United States.
- 15+ years of relevant legal experience.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. export controls, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
- Proven experience in creating and managing a compliance program and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment under minimum supervision.

Desired Qualifications
- Expertise in U.S. export control regulations within the space, defense, intelligence, or national security sectors.
- Experience working with Agile methodologies.
- Combination of law firm and in-house/government experience.
- Experience with spectrum management, and/or government data security.
- Engineering or other technology experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance may be required.
- Strategic thinker with a passion for national security.

Pay Transparency
This job posting may cover multiple career levels. To ensure greater transparency, we provide base salary ranges for all roles, regardless of location. Our standard pay ranges are based on the role’s function and level, benchmarked against similar growth-stage companies. Compensation may vary based on geographical location, as certain regions may have different cost-of-living factors. The final offer will also be influenced by the candidate's skills, responsibilities, and relevant experience.
Compensation Range
The Compensation Range for this role is $125,000 - $230,000.
