The Role: Supporting Excellence in Every Detail
As Liability and Property Claims Counsel, you will work independently and collaboratively to evaluate claims, provide legal guidance, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards. Reporting to the President, you will play a key role in supporting the Claims Department and the organization's legal needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Claims Department in determining compensability on property and liability claims.
- Conduct investigations into property and liability claims as needed.
- Provide counsel and guidance on the legal implications of claims, including subrogation opportunities.
- Evaluate claims, negotiate settlements, and promote best practices for members and claims staff.
- Stay current on legal trends, ensuring proactive and effective counsel for the organization.
- Collaborate with outside counsel on litigation plans and major claim issues.
- Prepare reports, communicate updates to the President, and collaborate with internal teams to enhance client services.
- Deliver legal training and best-practice guidelines for members, claims staff, and the legal team.
What We are Looking For
This position is ideal for someone with high attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a focus on maintaining positive relationships both internally and externally.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice in Virginia (West Virginia license is a plus).
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in property and liability litigation.
- In-depth knowledge of property and liability law, regulations, and case law.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal research tools (Lexis, Westlaw).
- Demonstrated ethical judgment, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence.
- Occasional travel is required; a valid driver’s license and an acceptable DMV record are necessary.
