Overview
The Senior Legal Assistant will be an integral part of supporting our ministry’s legal needs, assisting with ongoing litigation, and managing and reviewing commercial agreements, contracts, real estate transactions, and more—all while upholding Kanakuk’s commitment to integrity and stewardship. The Senior Legal Assistant will be responsible for maintaining organized legal files (both paper and electronic), ensuring compliance with records retention policies, and providing thorough research to support our mission. This role requires a heart for ministry, a strong initiative, and sound, independent judgment that reflects the values of Kanakuk Ministries.
Description of Duties

- Litigation Support: Partner with Kanakuk's legal team to support ongoing or anticipated litigation affecting the ministry. Responsibilities include gathering and reviewing relevant documents and communications, assisting in discovery and legal proceedings, and ensuring the accuracy of court filings.
- Real Estate Support: Lead efforts to ensure all real estate matters, including compliance with ground leases, facility leases, and property transfers, are accurately documented and aligned with Kanakuk’s stewardship standards. Maintain an organized record of all real estate documents and agreements. Partner with accounting to ensure timely and accurate payment.
- File Management: Oversee the management of legal and real estate files, including historical records and compliance with Kanakuk’s record retention policy. Track legal hold orders and confidential legal documents while maintaining a secure, accessible electronic repository for the legal team.
- Records Retention: Administer Kanakuk’s records retention policy for paper and electronic documents, including recycling, underground storage, and shredding processes. Ensure team members receive proper training and adhere to our policies for both paper and electronic record-keeping.
- Additional Support: Support the Chief Business Officer (CBO) on various projects and tasks, including:
Organize board meetings including materials and logistics.
Drafting agreements, such as commercial contracts and participant releases
Reviewing and analyzing external agreements, leases, and contracts
Assisting with corporate document updates (articles of incorporation, bylaws, etc.)
Reviewing, tracking, and processing legal invoices
Provide administrative support to the CBO
Qualifications:
- Education: Degree or certificate in paralegal studies, legal studies, or related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years as a legal assistant, paralegal, or similar role, with expertise in litigation, real estate, and insurance claims; nonprofit experience preferred.
- Skills: Strong initiative, self-directed with limited supervision, and effective in problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making.
- Interpersonal Abilities: Excellent communication, diplomacy, and patience when engaging with staff, contractors, and vendors.
- Confidentiality: Proven ability to handle sensitive information professionally.
- Attention to Detail: Skilled in data gathering, analysis, and concise report preparation.
