Job Summary:
The Missouri Board of Law Examiners is responsible for administering the bar examination and determining the character and fitness and eligibility of all applicants seeking admission to the bar in Missouri. The general counsel/director of investigations provides leadership and support for all aspects of legal review, investigations, and legal compliance.
Responsibilities:
- Directly supervise staff, including the assistant director of testing and analysts, advising on applicant investigations;
- Review and approve investigatory summaries of applicants’ files; communicating review and determination with the board;
- Work with the Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program (MOLAP) on evaluations and monitoring agreements;
- Draft monitoring agreements and correspond with entities regarding agreements;
- Determine eligibility of applicants who are graduates from law schools not approved by the American Bar Association;
- Review ADA accommodation requests and communicate with experts in recommending to the board whether such requests should be granted;
- Work with Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel (OCDC) regarding investigations into applicants who have applied for reinstatement of their bar licenses;
- Remain apprised of relevant litigation in the areas of bar admissions, ADA accommodations, and character and fitness reviews;
- Organize and facilitate character and fitness hearings at least four times per year;
- Prepare appeals of applicant denials to the Supreme Court of Missouri;
- Research any legal questions that arise on behalf of the Supreme Court of Missouri, the board, or the executive director;
- Assist in drafting any changes to Supreme Court of Missouri Rule 8;
- Assist in developing and drafting any internal policies and procedures;
- Field questions from applicants, attorneys, law schools, and other jurisdictions;
- Provide back-up to the executive director and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a law degree from an accredited law school and have at least five years’ professional experience in the practice of law. Must have a current Missouri law license.
Salary and Benefits:
Annual starting salary up to $95,000 depending on qualifications. This position is eligible for full benefits and leave accruals provided through the Board of Law Examiners.
