Role Synopsis:
The Head of Legal, BPX, is responsible for leading the BPX Energy Legal team in its provision of legal services to BPX Energy related to BPX’s midstream and upstream US onshore business activities. This includes:
- Leading/managing the BPX Energy legal team in the delivery of legal support to BPX Energy across numerous legal areas such as oil and gas, environmental, regulatory, litigation, and M&A;
- Providing legal advice and counsel to the CEO/President of BPX Energy and the BPX Energy leadership team;
- Managing litigation involving BPX Energy and engaging/managing external counsel who perform services on behalf of BPX Energy;
- Advising the boards of directors of the relevant BPX Energy legal entities regarding BPX Energy legal risks;
- Coordinating with colleagues in other legal and functional teams within BP to deliver integrated overall legal support to BPX Energy; and
- Managing internal and external legal spend.
Key Accountabilities:
- Reporting to the AGC Production & Operations Americas and sitting and participating on the BPX Energy leadership team to provide strategic and tactical support on key issues.
- Developing and implementing effective legal strategies and advice at the most senior levels to manage complex matters in the fields covered by the BPX Energy legal team and interacting effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Representing the legal team on a range of ethics and compliance, governance, and business issues which may arise in relation to BPX Energy.
- Being a trusted adviser to BPX Energy by providing a wide range of advice, input, and assistance on key issues and risks.
- Setting key priorities and strategic direction for the BPX Energy legal team aligned with strategic business priorities.
- Coaching, mentoring, and developing lawyers in the team to assist them in providing quality legal advice aligned with key business priorities.
- Promoting and maintaining close engagement of the legal team with the businesses and collaborating across BP Legal, to build strong connections and to share learnings.
Essential Education:
- JD Degree from an ABA accredited U.S. law school or international equivalent.
- An active license in good standing to practice law in any state in the U.S.
- 15+ years’ experience in the practice of law with emphasis in the oil & gas industry and demonstrated leadership/management abilities.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
- Extensive experience working in and supporting upstream / E&P businesses including: commercial activities; transactions and negotiations; delivery of complex upstream / E&P projects and operations; and input on business and legal risks.
- Strong technical legal skills, combined with an ability to take a strategic, pragmatic, and commercial view on the challenges and issues facing BP and BPX Energy.
- Experience leading teams, setting vision and objectives, and developing others.
- Strong client counselling skills with ability to assess and effectively communicate relevant legal and business risks.
- Ability to cope with a wide and varied workload and effectively prioritize with a focus on materiality.
- Ability to focus on continuous improvement as an individual and in leading a team.
- Ability to deal with unstructured/undefined issues or problems and deal with ambiguous and commercially uncertain situations.
- Excellent communication skills (applying a good balance of listening and questioning skills) to understand different perspectives and build relationships with the business.
- Drive, commitment, a bias for action, and a preparedness to collaborate and innovate.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the business and across BP Legal.
